Switzerland is widely known for premium chocolate and exquisite cheeses. But have you heard of this tiny country’s booming craft beer scene? Statistics show that while the number of pints people are drinking hasn’t changed much in the last 50 years, the variety has skyrocketed: in 1970, Switzerland was home to just 60 breweries. Today, there are more than 800 of them.
In this post, I will introduce you to four Swiss breweries that make awesome craft beer.

Altes Tramdepot in Bern
As the name suggests, this brewery is located inside a former tram depot – a building where trams used to be parked outside of service hours or during maintenance work.
Altes Tramdepot has three craft beers on tap:
- Tram-Helles, a mildly hoppy lager brewed with Pilsen and caramel malt,
- Tram-Märzen, a malty amber lager brewed with Vienna, Pilsen, and dark caramel malt, and
- Tram-Weizen, a wheat beer with a foamy head, just like the ones you get at Oktoberfest.
Speaking of Oktoberfest, Altes Tramdepot has its own bar. And that bar is the perfect place to have a party: depending on how much you can drink, the staff will bring either a beer tower or beer barrel to your table so you can enjoy any beer on tap. In total, there are around 30 different specialties to choose from.

White Frontier in Martigny
White Frontier brews IPAs, lagers, pale ales, and session wheat beers to sell on the Internet. The cool thing about their online store – apart from the beautiful pictures of snow-covered mountains – is the fact that you can create your very own variety pack. If you want to, you can select a single bottle of any kind of beer. That way, you can mix and match and frequently try new flavors without risking spending a fortune on something you won’t like.
I highly recommend Spiced Saison with paradise seeds, coriander, and orange peel. But there are so many great craft beers to choose from.

Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes in Saignelégier
Tucked away in a tiny village, Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes has won several national and international awards. Even the New York Times has raved about its beers. That said, my favorite item at Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes isn’t even a beverage – it’s a beer mustard. And you know what I like to put it on? Vegan beer brats. But the roughly 20 craft beers are pretty good here, too.

Beer Factory in Rapperswil
Do you have a friend who’s into craft beer? Then you should order their next birthday present at Beer Factory. This brewery makes beautifully designed, six-pack gift boxes with three different kinds of Swiss craft beer per piece.
Do you have a friend who’s really into craft beer? Consider every birthday present from here on out covered: Beer Factory switches its gift boxes up all the time, at least once every season.
Right now, they’ve got the Winterlust gift box:
- 2 mild pale ales spiced with peppers and black tea
- 2 very refreshing, dry-hopped pale ales, and
- 2 full-bodied dry stouts with roasted aromas.
Another great choice is Beer Factory’s Corporate Monkey craft lager. Like the name suggests, it’s the perfect after-work drink: crisp, flavorful, and not too bitter.
