When you land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), most people completely overlook the nearby neighborhood of El Segundo, just five minutes from the busy airport. El Segundo may be a small town in Los Angeles County, but it is packed with great places to grab a drink or a bite to eat. With tourists heading north of LAX to Santa Monica and partiers going south to Manhattan Beach, El Segundo is completely under the radar. This beach town is quiet and quaint compared to other LA cities, but that is where you find the local favorites.
One of these local favorites is a brewery on Main Street called El Segundo Brewing. El Segundo Brewing is surrounded by a few other popular beer spots like Rock & Brews and Brewport Taphouse, but this one really caters more to the relaxed, LA native. As you arrive at the entrance, the taproom appears to be in the basement of a very plain building and, when you walk downstairs, it feels more like a sports bar or a dive bar than a brewery. The space gets fairly loud and crowded, even as the “basement” opens up past the hallway, but at least you do not have to deal with the strange bar smell and sticky floors. Although it may not be a trendy, “Instagram-worthy” taproom, this true brewery atmosphere is what gives El Segundo Brewing its raw and local feel.
El Segundo Brewing’s talented brewers work in-house to develop delicious beer that stands out among the competition. The staff are hard-working and well-educated in their many rotating taps, and they keep the place spotless even during peak hours. New beers are introduced frequently and include red ales, blonde ales, pale ales, smooth stouts that are rich in flavor, and plenty of hoppy and refreshing IPA options to enjoy on the West Coast. If you are visiting for the first, or even second time, a flight is the best way to find your favourite. It is rare to visit a brewery, taste a full flight of beers, and like every single one of them, but at El Segundo Brewing, none of your samples will go to waste.
El Segundo Brewing is a great environment to catch a sports game or meet up with friends. As Dodgers fans, they offer a Dodgers promotion with $5 Citra pale ale pints during games all season long. This draws a close community of locals, but the staff and regulars are always welcoming to outsiders who are looking for a good beer. If you do not make it to El Segundo, the brewery is heavily involved in local events, representing El Segundo all over Los Angeles at various culture, food and drink festivals. You can also find some of their beers on tap or bottled throughout California, including the famous Mayberry IPA and Hammerland DIPA.
If you are visiting on the weekend, the loading doors in the back of the bar will often open to a delicious food vendor. Something is usually smoking back there and the smell will get your cravings going, so save plenty of room for a large plate of barbeque. If you are still hungry, El Segundo just recently opened a pizza place around the corner called The Slice and Pint. You can find all of their local beers and some wine in this casual, sit-down restaurant.
There is no question why the ratings for El Segundo Brewing are nearly 5 stars on any platform. The award-winning beer is consistent with distinct and rich flavors, and there is a great team behind the bar and the brew kettles. Overall, it is just a fun place to hang out and enjoy a quality beer.
